Digital Media & Learning Competition

In February 2008, the inaugural Competition in Digital Media and Learning distributed $2 million in funding to individuals and organizations. Selected from more than 1000 applications, the 17 winning projects are expected to produce promising innovations and share new ideas within the emerging field of digital media and learning. The competition is supported by MacArthur and administered by HASTAC, a consortium of humanists, artists, scientists, social scientists and engineers from universities and other civic institutions across the U.S. and internationally.

Winners of the Competition were drawn from two categories, with funding between $30,000 and $238,000.  The larger “innovation” awards fund entrepreneurs to develop new learning environments using media ranging from digital games to social networks and mobile phones.  The “knowledge networking” awards provide funds for sharing best practices and research about digital media and learning.  The projects use a broad range of digital media tools, including social networks, games, cell phones, blogs and other web 2.0 technologies, and although all projects are based in the U.S., many have a global focus.

The selection process was highly competitive. Fifty distinguished judges scored the applications, with the winners selected by a panel of 10 judges that included entrepreneurs, educators, academics, and journalists.
